Yes, but those who question Israel’s democracy often do so in bad faith. Israel is a young democracy, born under exceptional circumstances, and living under exceptional circumstances. Hard to do the right thing all the times when you are surrounded for 60 years by people who would rather see you dead.
Democracy thrives where there is a strong division of powers, and democracy per se does not ensure to do the right thing all the time. As long as there is an independent judiciary checking on the legislative and executive branches, mistakes can always be corrected. True, Israel does not have a proper constitution. But there are strong basic laws, a bill of rights and a strong tension between secular and religious orientations that gives some measure of equilibrium to the process. Sure, still too much religion, if you ask me…
